Sam Claflin to Play Finnick Character in 'Catching Fire'

Lionsgate confirmed this week that actor Sam Claflin will portray Finnick Odair in the upcoming sequel to "The Hunger Games," "Catching Fire."

Clafin's character in the film will be a former winner of the Hunger Games and becomes a serious challenge for the film's main protagonist Katniss Everdeen as she makes her return to the arena in the second installment of the series.

The two are said to form a suspicious alliance during the film, and Everdeen never seems to fully trust him.

The role of Finnick in "Catching Fire" created many discussion boards all over the internet where "Hunger Games" junkies speculated over who would actually play the part in the second chapter of the trilogy.

Claflin, a 26-year old British actor landed the role and should see a boost in popularity due to his involvement in the franchise. He first made waves during his appearance as Phillip in the 2011 film "Pirates of the Carribean: On Stranger Tides." Claflin also played William in this year's "Snow White and the Huntsman."

The actor seems to be rising fast in the world of Hollywood, scoring roles in three huge blockbusters in the past few years. To him, it all seems like a dream.

"My mum is a classroom assistant at the high school I went to and Dad is an accountant and a finance manager for a charity radio station," said Claflin to the Sun in a recent interview. "I can't quite fathom what is going on with my life at the moment. For me to be able to play across from some of the great names is unbelievable. It is so bizarre. I used to play with Lego, and now I am a Pirates of the Caribbean Lego figurine."
