A Samaritans Purse (SP) nurse is using compassion and sacrifice to minister to a strict Muslim community in Sudan.
The Christian humanitarian agency which supports two medical clinics and a 20-bed hospital is reaching out to the Muslim community through its compassion work, helping to develop a deep trust among the Beja people.
In one example, posted by the group on its website, an SP nurse working at a hospital supported by Samaritans Purse in northeastern Africa visited a sick Beja girl named Sharifa who was dying from anemia. The girls husband had refused permission to take here to a hospital although she had a high fever and was vomiting.
During the visit, the nurse prayed with the family in their tent and returned the next morning with transfusion equipment and donated her own blood. The girl recovered a few days later and her relatives celebrated.
God did this miracle and I want you to know that, the nurse told Sharifas family. I didnt know if her body would accept my blood, but it did.
In addition to the medical ministry, Samaritans Purse offers health education programs, lessons on basic life skills, and provides therapeutic and supplemental feeding programs for pregnant Beja women, infants, young children, and the elderly.
Samaritans Purse reported that during a recent community gathering, a local leader expressed thanks to the nurse who helped to save Sharifas life. The Beja leader said that it is unheard of for someone to donate blood to someone else, but this white woman gave her blood for one of us, he said.
