Samsung announces the Gear S2 smartwatch

Korea's tech giant has just announced its latest smartwatch, the Samsung Gear S2, a round-faced wearable that was demonstrated earlier in Samsung's Unpacked event on Aug. 13.

In a press release on Monday, the giant company introduced the wearable that comes in two variants: Gear S2 standard and Gear S2 classic. Like the usual smartwatches around, the Gear S2 has sensors including a gyroscope, an accelerator, and an optical heart rate monitor, which gives the wearer a personal fitness assistant on hand.

While the display is relatively small compared to other wearable brands with a 1.2-inch Super AMOLED display sporting a 360 x 360 resolution, it comes with standard connectivity links such as WiFi, NFC, and Bluetooth.

Along with the declaration that the wearable will feature a 3G version that has the first-ever e-SIM with voice capabilities, Forbes says the new device "shuns Google's Android Wear in favor of Samsung's own operating system," as it chooses to leave behind the tradition of Android Wear's third-party app collection.

CEO and head of Samsung's IT & Mobile business JK Shin said, "The Samsung Gear S2 reflects Samsung's most progressive innovation. It is the perfect complement for any occasion, easily taking you from day to night, from work to workout — and ensuring that you get more out of every moment in your day, by making it smarter and ultimately more personal and fun," noting that the company has since been offering new concepts for its consumers to enjoy.

The device is but 11.4 millimeters thin and allows users to access notification pop-ups easily with an optimized 1-gigahertz dual-core processor. It also sports a 24-hour activity log that lets users take a look into their daily progress.

In what it calls the "ultimate convenience" for users, Samsung claims that the wearable allows mobile payments and other financial activities "without the need for a wallet."

While the company has not slipped on the pricing and release date, fans expect that the wearable is just around the bend.
