Samsung Galaxy Folder 2 Release Date and Updates: The Device That Combines a Flip Phone with a Smartphone; Specs and Details Revealed
Bring Back the Nostalgia with This Throwback to the Flip Phone Era
Ever wondered how a clam shell phone would look and feel like if it had a touch screen display? Samsung has got that covered as they officially launch the Galaxy Folder 2.
Flip Phone + Smartphone
Samsung brings the nostalgia of flip phones and combines it with the technology of the modern smartphone as the tech giant announces the Galaxy Folder 2. The design language of the device is somewhat similar to the current smartphone lineup offered by Samsung.
The flip phone will seemingly come in a platinum silver color with a metallic finish all over. The entire device is made up of two sections. First is the touch screen component, where the selfie camera and front firing speaker also reside. The second half of the smartphone houses the alphanumeric keypad. The back of this module is dual curved for a tighter grip, again similar to Samsung's current flagship offerings. The two sections are joined by a hinge that runs the width of the entire device.
The phone veers away from the traditional smartphone QWERTY format. The Galaxy Folder 2 brings back the twelve-character keypad wherein each button represents a number and a set of three or four letters. This is largely because of the narrow and elongated form factor of the device.
There is also a unified navigation button atop of the keypad. The multitasking and home capacitive buttons are found on its left side, while the back and messaging shortcut buttons are at the left.
Specs
The Galaxy Folder 2 is no slouch when it comes to specs. The display is a 3.8-inch screen with TFT LCD technology. It sports a WVGA 480 x 800 resolution. The size of this display accounts for the large overall form factor of the smartphone, especially when open. It measures 122 x 60.2 x 15.4mm and weighs a hefty 166 grams.
It is run with the entry-level Snapdragon 425 chipset with a quad-core CPU clocked in at 1.4GHz. There is also 2GB of RAM, along with a 16GB of internal storage that is expandable via a microSD card. This internal processing power allows for the device to not only perform the basic tasks expected of a flip phone, but to also handle light to moderate apps as part of its smartphone package.
Rear-facing camera complete with an LED flash sits at the back of the keypad module. It features an 8-megapixel sensor capable of 1080p video recording. The selfie snapper then houses a 5-megapixel module.
The Galaxy Folder 2 also features the standard LTE (with VoLTE), GPS, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 4.2 connections. It runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow and packs a 1950 mAh battery.
There is no official pricing and release date for the device though. A rumor places the price tag at around $285, with availability being exclusive to China at launch, with other regions to follow shortly.
