Samsung Galaxy Nexus Release Date: Ice Cream Sandwich Port Available for Nexus S
A fully functioning port of Ice Cream Sandwich is now available for the Nexus S.
Soon after the unveiling of Ice Cream Sandwich and its flagship smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, developers quickly started to use the available Software Development Kit to create a port for various phones, including the Nexus S and Nexus One.
A number of well-known developers have worked together to create the port, including "Breezy" of the Android Central forums.
Breezy released his progress Oct. 21 and was responsible for building the Ice Cream Sandwich ROM.
Commentators are calling his port "nearly flawless.”
However, they also noted that the Nexus S uses soft keys,so the virtual buttons of the touch screen user interface are not present. The Galaxy Nexus, which will be the first phone to officially run Ice Cream Sandwich, is completely button free.
The Nexus S is the first phone slated to be re-released with an Ice Cream Sandwich update. Other phones scheduled to receive the Ice Cream Sandwich update by 2012 include the Nexus S, Motorola DROID Bionic and DROID RAZR, and the Samsung Galaxy S2.
The Ice Cream Sandwich port for the Nexus S is available for download at GizmoCrunch, a technology website.
An Ice Cream Sandwich port for the Nexus One may also be available soon, as Developer dr1337md released his progress with the port via YouTube on Oct. 24.
