Samsung Galaxy Note 7 Recall News and Updates: Units Officially Recalled Due to Battery Problems; How to Replace Purchased Phones

Battery Explosions Force Samsung to Pull Out Galaxy Note 7 Globally

Not so perfect after all. With the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 being highly regarded in the tech community as being one of the first, if not the first, smartphone remarkably close to perfection, the Korean tech giant pulls it out. A global recall of the Note 7 is being enforced by Samsung due to exploding units.

Official Recall

Before the big recall fiasco, there have been rumors that Samsung ordered the production of Galaxy Note 7 to be stopped. Shipments have been temporarily delayed for what Samsung said was for additional quality assurance inspections, and sales have been halted altogether.

Fast forward to today, Samsung has officially announced the total global recall of the Galaxy Note 7. Market stocks worldwide have been pulled out. Customers who have already purchased the device will have their current units replaced by Samsung over the next few weeks.

Defective Battery Packs

The recall is mainly due to faulty battery packs. Per the official statement released by Samsung, 35 cases of defective batteries have been reported as of September 1. This battery pack issue is not one to scoff off either, as multiple users have reported about their units catching fire while plugged in, with some devices going with violent explosions.

A previous Samsung report also said that only 24 out of a million units sold are affected. Gutted down, this number figures in at 1 in 42,000 devices or about 0.1 percent, which could already be considered a significant amount given the device's popularity and the company's reputation. With the official statement raising this number to 35, then the odds against the Note 7 have just increased.

In the similar statement, Samsung reassured their customers on the company's commitment to the highest quality products. The issue is now under a thorough investigation and has already acknowledged the battery cell issue. All smartphones units will not just undergo replacements, but will be going back to the source manufacturer for battery changing.

How to Replace Your Note 7

For those of you who have already purchased the smartphone several actions can be done to have your units replaced. First is to call Samsung's customer service team at 1 800-SAMSUNG (or 1-800-726-7864). They will take you through the process of returning the phone. There is also a live chat support for customers.

Samsung has also dished out a Galaxy Note 7 replacement program. Two options will be available, with the first being a fixed Note 7 in exchange for your original unit. The other option is for you to exchange your original Note 7 for a Galaxy S7 Edge, with additional replacement of any Note 7 accessories and a refund on the price difference. Also, Samsung is also offering either a $25 gift card or credit off their carrier bill for the inconvenience.

With the unit just released on August 19, sales for the Galaxy Note 7 have been soaring high. The device has been riding on the success of its older siblings, the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge. This recall occurs at a very bad time for Samsung, as the new iPhones are set to arrive next week, and the new Nexus phones in the following month.
