Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Specs, Release Date Rumor: This Long-Awaited Feature Will Be Debuted in the Phablet
Although it is not coming until late next year, the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 is already the subject of many reports and leaks. The latest to emerge suggests that the next-generation phablet will finally debut a long-awaited feature that will help them one-up Apple.
KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has proven himself to be a reliable and credible source by providing accurate information and analysis on mobile releases over the years, claims in a new research note picked up by Business Insider that the under-display fingerprint sensor will be integrated in the device.
With this feature, users can unlock the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 by simply pressing a portion of the display. It will take up no extra space, unlike the current fingerprint sensors, whose awkward positioning on the current Note model has been a major source of gripe for users.
Efforts to make the under-display fingerprint sensor a reality in the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 have begun with three companies looking to be Samsung's provider of the component.
While the Apple supplier Synaptics is in the running, it is believed that the Korean company BeyondEyes and the Samsung subsidiary Samsung LSI have better chances of snagging the gig.
This is not only because the two manufacturers have already shipped part samples to Samsung, but also because the tech giant has a different approach in bringing the under-display fingerprint sensor on the Samsung Galaxy Note 9.
The South Korean tech firm will make use of new technology that will allow the OLED screen to serve a second purpose as a light source for the sensor, which will, in turn, make for better battery life.
Previous reports suggested that Apple was supposed to incorporate the under-display fingerprint sensor on the iPhone X, but was unsuccessful to do so, leading the Cupertino giant to use 3D Face ID instead.
Whether or not the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 will have a similar feature on top of the under-display fingerprint sensor remains unclear for now.
