Samsung Galaxy S8 Release Date, Specs and Features Rumors: Bixby Digital Assistant to Launch
Samsung introduces its new digital voice assistant, Bixby. The artificial intelligence (AI) companion is confirmed to debut with the coming Galaxy S8, and even has its own handset button for users to talk to it. The Galaxy S8 is also set to launch in an event hosted by Samsung in New York on March 29.
Bixby is Samsung's own entry into the increasingly crowded field of digital AI assistants, some of which have been on the market for several years now. Entering the field against Apple's Siri, Amazon's Alexa, Google Assistant and Microsoft's Cortana, Samsung looks undeterred by the established competition in the voice assistant market. According to CNet, Samsung believes that the next major trend in computing lies in artificial intelligence and is quick to act in pushing for an early launch for Bixby, which is set to debut with the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S8.
Samsung has a lot of ground to catch up with the Samsung Galaxy S8. For one, the Galaxy S7 battery debacle could have sent the reputation of the phone maker on a nose dive that will be very difficult to climb up from.
Another, and equally concerning, is that Samsung has yet to put out a competitive digital assistant on par with the offerings from the competition. When the company launched its first attempt at a voice assistant, called the S Voice, with the Galaxy S3, the results were deemed unreliable and was not able to catch up to the popular digital assistants in the market today.
The new Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus will be announced on March 29. An official pre-registration page has already been set up by the company in anticipation of the launch, according to PC Advisor.
The March 29 announcement date was confirmed at the Mobile World Congress 2017. Although there has been no announcement on the date that the device will be available for sale, sources indicate that April 21 looks to be the most likely date.
