Samsung Galaxy S8 vs. Honor 8: 4,000 mAh Battery Makes Huawei's Product a Good Contender
Everyone is understandably excited since the Samsung Galaxy S8 was unveiled last March 29. However, reports have it that Huawei's Honor 8 Pro actually gives the South Korean smartphone a good fight with its 4,000-milliampere hour battery.
The mobile's battery is not the only aspect to consider, though it is one of the top priorities when a person is looking to buy a new smartphone. It is good to compare the other specifications that both devices have as well.
Battery
As mentioned, the Honor 8 Pro clearly wins this round by a 1,000 mAh since the Galaxy S8 only has 3,000 mAh under its hood. And according to GSM Arena, when the Honor 8 Pro is on 3G network mode, it can possibly stay up to 504 hours (or 21 days) on standby and deliver 30 hours of talk time.
On the other hand, the 3,000 mAh specs for the Galaxy S8 is a common pack that is seen on most smartphones these days. While it proves to be sufficient, an extra 1,000 mAh is undeniably something to consider.
Screen
If the Honor 8 Pro dominates the battery department, the Galaxy S8 might take over the battle for the better screen display.
During the Galaxy S8's launch last March 29 in New York City, one of the highlights of the event was the Infinity Display technology introduced on the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus. It practically bumps up the screen-to-body ratio to around 83 percent compared to the Honor 8 Pro's 73 percent.
However, the Honor 8 Pro is proving to be good competition even in this area since it has a 5.7-inch screen size while the Galaxy S8 comes in at 5.8 inches. In terms of resolution, Huawei's device does not fall that behind with a 1,440 x 2,560 resolution while the Galaxy S8 has 1,440 x 2,960. Both have more than a 500 pixel per inch density as well - the Honor 8 Pro has 515 ppi and the Galaxy S8 has 570 ppi.
CPU, Memory, OS
Even in the processing chip department, the Honor 8 Pro is giving the Galaxy S8 a good fight. The former runs with Huawei's own chipset HiSilicon Kirin 960 packed with four cores with 2.4-gigahertz plus another set of four cores of 1.8 GHz power.
The Galaxy S8 will have varying CPUs. For the South Korean market, the device will be powered with Samsung's Exynox 8895, which is an octa-core chipset with a combination of 2.3 GHz and 1.7 GHz power, while other markets like the U.S. will get a device with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 that has four cores of 2.35 GHz and another four cores of 1.9 GHz.
Both come with a pre-installed 64 GB internal memory and 4 GB random access memory. However, the Galaxy S8 gets the upper hand in terms of expanding the storage. The Galaxy S8 has two slots for microSD (up to 256 GB), a dedicated area plus the second SIM slot that can also house the memory card.
On the other hand, Honor 8 Pro owners will have to choose between having two working carriers at the same time or having just one to accommodate space for an extra storage memory.
Both devices arrive off the box with Android 7.0 Nougat.
Price
Considering all the specs comparison mentioned above, it boils down to the price for many consumers. Naturally, Huawei's device is at a lower price point and costs around $590 while Galaxy S8 is expected to cost $750.
Both devices are going on sale later this month.
