Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 Features, Specs Review: Latest Gear Designed More Like a Real Watch
Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 is a companion gadget compatible for 17 of Samsung Galaxy devices like the Samsung Galaxy S5, Galaxy Grand 2, Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy Note3 Neo, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy S4 and others.
"The Galaxy Gear 2 and Galaxy Gear 2 Neo are essential companion devices, allowing you to accept or ignore incoming calls and messages, and providing notification options based on your activity and habits. Both act as an extension of your daily life, giving you more control with a range of standalone features," Samsung said in a statement.
According to the Samsung.com microsite for the gadget, major changes on the gear are being focused on the hardware. As compared to last year's Galaxy Gear, the newer version comes with a better design and is packed with more useful features, although it maintains the basic premise found on the previous Gear.
Compared to the previous version, the latest Gear's camera can now be found on the body of the watch, giving options for the wearer to change straps. The wrist strap is made of textured rubberized plastic. Customers can go to Samsung watch store and see a wide array of choices like classic leather bands, a DayGlo, and lots of others.
The Gear 2 also feature a mini IR-blaster, a new add-on. It is IP67-certified for its water and dust resistance capacity, although the device is not meant for swimming or diving.
PC Pro U.K. noted in their report the reduction of the size, which also means a smaller battery size. However, Samsung claims that there is a threefold improvement when it comes to the latest device's battery life. This is due to the integration of the Tizen OS.
Specs-wise, the new Gear now runs on a dual-core 1GHz processor, an upgrade from the previous single-core processor. It can track heart rate and steps even with other applications open like music player.
Furthermore, PC Advisor said that though newest model has become more stylish to wear, thanks to its sleeker, futuristic design, it still has a limited appeal.
In conclusion, CNET gave their Bottom Line verdict of the new product saying, "Samsung has made strides with the Gear 2, but this smartwatch is on its own island with few apps and Samsung-only device compatibility. At this point, you're better off waiting for Android Wear."
