San Francisco 49ers Defensive End Arik Armstead Placed on Injured Reserve With Broken Hand

San Francisco 49ers defensive end Arik Armstead's season is likely over after he broke his left hand in the second quarter of Sunday's 26–24 loss to the Washington Redskins.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has confirmed that Armstead will have to undergo surgery to repair the damage on his broken hand and he's going to be out indefinitely. According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Armstead is expected to miss four to six weeks of action while he recovers, but he will have to sit out a minimum of eight games because the 49ers have officially placed him on the injured reserve list.

Armstead has started in all six games so far for the 49ers this season and he has recorded 16 tackles, 1.5 sacks and one pass defensed.

The team also announced that they have released tight end Logan Paulsen and signed defensive linemen Leger Douzable and Tony McDaniel.

The 49ers had to add more depth to their defensive line because backup defensive end Aaron Lynch is expected to miss some time as well due to a calf strain.

The good news is that Dekoda Watson is expected to return to action after missing the last two weeks with a groin strain. Rookie linebacker Reuben Foster is close to a return as well.

"The more guys you lose, the less you like that depth," Shanahan said, via ESPN.

"We'll have to [discuss Armstead and injured reserve] over the next couple days and we're going to have Lynch out, too, for at least a week, most likely more. That takes away two guys who were helping. Hopefully we'll get [LB] Dekoda [Watson] back this week, which would help because I know he missed last week with his groin and hopefully getting him back will help that depth and I'm sure we're going to get someone else here," he continued.
