San Francisco 49ers Name Rookie C.J. Beathard as Their New Starting Quarterback
The San Francisco 49ers still haven't won a game this season, but C.J. Beathard has given fans some hope for the future following his impressive performance against the Washington Redskins on Sunday.
The rookie quarterback came in for Brian Hoyer halfway through the second quarter in the game, and it didn't take long for him to make an impact.
The 49ers couldn't walk away with the victory as the Redskins hold on for 26–24 victory, but they managed to keep the game close after a 17–0 start with Hoyer as their quarterback. Beathard went 19 of 36 for 245 yards with one touchdown, and after the game, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed that he would be the team's starting quarterback moving forward.
"C.J. had a good week of practice. He's put two good weeks together. Going in, I knew if it went like that then I'd have to make the move to give us a chance to win," Shanahan said, via the 49ers' official website.
"I thought he came in and competed," he stated. "He came in there and gave us a little spark. He made a few off-schedule plays which was nice. We will watch the film. It wasn't perfect, but when you've got a tough guy who hangs in there and competes, I think he'll learn from it," he added.
Beathard was selected by the 49ers in the third round of this year's draft, but he hasn't played much before the game against the Redskins. Still, Shanahan seems to believe that Beathard has done enough to supplant Hoyer as the starter. In any case, Hoyer has played poorly so far this season, so benching may not be such a bad idea.
Beathard will make his first-career start when the 49ers take on the Dallas Cowboys at home on Sunday, Oct. 22.
