San Francisco 49ers News: Vernon Davis Looking for A New Deal

The San Francisco 49ers are a team going through a lot of rebuilding these days.

Once considered one of the best in the league, the 49ers have lost a number of key players through the summer via trades or by surprising retirements. They once had a potent offensive squad, with a young quarterback with Colin Kaepernick and one of the best offensive lines in the game.

Among the elite in the conversation is tight end Vernon Davis.

Before last season, Davis was considered one of the better tight ends, racking up 52 catches which converted to 820 yards and 13 touchdowns. His career numbers are impressive as well, with already 55 touchdowns in 133 career games – with two seasons under his belt with 10 or more touchdowns.

However, he went through a considerable slide last season and his numbers were less than impressive. He only caught 26 passes and ran for 245 yards for two touchdowns. He was not an integral component in the offense and it was clear that his absence made the 49ers struggle and completely miss the post-season.

Now in a league where you are remembered by your latest performance, Davis only has one year left in his contract and is in a stalemate with the 49ers franchise. It appears that Davis wants to stay long-term. And with his contract one of the bigger ones in the team, the organization is a little hesitant to give Davis what he wants.

At 31 years old, this year could be Davis' way to prove the organization what he is worth. When no one is expecting much from San Francisco, a lot of weight is on the shoulders of the tight end to deliver. If he does, then expect the 49ers to repay him with the deal he wants. But if things go the other way, then there are younger and cheaper options available on the market.
