San Francisco 49ers NFL Trade Rumors: 49ers Are Looking to Add More Quarterbacks
San Francisco 49ers added two veteran quarterbacks last week when they signed Brian Hoyer and Matt Barkley, but they aren't done adding to the position.
"We'll continue to look. You rarely take just two guys into a camp. So I have a pretty good feeling we will add more. I don't know whether that'll be through free agency or the draft, but there's every avenue possible. We don't limit ourselves to anything," coach Kyle Shanahan said on Friday, according to CSN Bay Area.
That doesn't really come as a surprise to football fans. Hoyer is a capable starter, but many observers believe the team is going to look for a long-term solution at quarterback.
"Shanahan wasn't hired to sell fans on the idea of recreating the same quarterback room used by last year's three-win Chicago Bears. Hoyer is a serviceable stopgap with recent starting experience, while Barkley had his moments in 2016," NFL.com's Marc Sessler said in his report.
That's exactly what Hoyer is — a stopgap. He's not a franchise quarterback.
Well, the 49ers can select a young quarterback with their second overall draft pick. Deshaun Watson, Mitchell Trubisky, DeShone Kizer and Pat Mahomes are interesting prospects and the team will probably give them a long look. The quarterback they pick will have the opportunity to compete for the starting role. And if their pick fails to impress right away, the team can always play him behind the two veterans and bring him along slowly during the 2017 season.
However, Sessler doesn't think that Shanahan will use the pick on a quarterback. He said Shanahan probably doesn't believe any of the prospects can start right away and that's why they signed Hoyer and Barkley.
Aside from the draft, the 49ers can also add another quarterback via trade. Kirk Cousins has been linked with the team for weeks now. He wants to leave, but the Washington Redskins have shown no indication that they are interested in trading away their starting quarterback.
