A big improvement in both areas of the field will be needed if they are to put in some early season performances to send a message to the rest of the NFL that they are in it to win it this year.
Meanwhile, the Vikings' preseason preparations have gone off the rails so far. They have lost both their preseason matches so far; a 13-27 loss at home to the Houston Texans, and a 16-20 loss on the road to Buffalo.
They will be desperate to get a win under their belts tonight, and if they fail to do so tonight they risk hitting the regular season opening day without a win, and potentially without much confidence.
After tonight's game with the 49ers, the Vikings will have one more preseason game left next week when they host Tennessee in a Thursday night game. They have a lot of work to do to get to the level they want before the season begins.
