Even before the airing of the variety show's 42nd season, the fans of the show were already looking forward to watching the premiere. It did help when it was announced that Alec Baldwin struck a deal to be part of the comedy series and that the SNL opener will be hosted by Margot Robbie.

But, none more riveting than the highly-anticipated comedy sketch about the 2016 US presidential debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.
The show started with a cold open of the political parody where the two candidates exchanged jibes. Both Baldwin, who played Trump, and Kate McKinnon, who impersonates Clinton, were extolled by critics for their outstanding satirical mimicry of the two presidential aspirants.
The actors were able to imitate their respective subjects to the letter, and were able to exaggerate both Trump and Clinton's idiosyncrasies for comic effect.
Hillary Clinton Laughed Just as Hard as Anyone Else
The writers did a good job exposing the flaws of the two candidates, and both Clinton and Trump were subjects of ridicule for the night. But, the former US secretary of state was one of those millions of viewers who failed to contain themselves from laughing at the characters.
"I'll tell you when Kate McKinnon came out with the walker, I thought I was going to fall off my chair," the Democrat told "Extra's" AJ Calloway. "She makes me laugh anyway, she is so funny just naturally. Oh, my gosh, she was amazing. I wish I could do the jumps, the splits, the somersault."
She also lauded Baldwin for his Trump impression. She said that his look and antics were just "perfect." Clinton even added that she is game for another SNL appearance despite her demanding schedule ahead of the upcoming elections.
Effect of the Show on Trump and Clinton
According to Ted Johnson of Variety, the show will only highlight the weaknesses of each candidate and it creates a more lasting impression among voters.
For Dean Obeidallah, who previously worked for SNL, the show did a good job of going after Trump and exposing him as a he is--- "a misogynist and tax evading bigot." The American-Muslim comedian is a staunch critic of the GOP candidate.
