It seems like Executive Producer Lorne Michaels' move to shake things up a bit, particularly with the casting, has paid off with the news of "Saturday Night Live" 42nd season premiere. It has already pulled together the show's highest rating for its debut episode since 2008.
Nielsen even scored the first installment for this season, which is hosted by Margot Robbie ("Suicide Squad"), 29 percent higher than last year's premiere episode.
Alec Baldwin's Take on Donald Trump Was Spot On
While a lot of fans were excited about the fact that Robbie was hosting the premier, the attention is no doubt on Alec Baldwin, who will try to deliver his best impression of one of the 2016 U.S. elections central figure, Donald Trump for the season.
SNL curtain raiser was all about the much-talked about Presidential Debate last Sept. 26. Baldwin's Trump exchanged gibes with Hillary Clinton played by Kate McKinnon. Baldwin nailed the impersonation as he was able to replicate how the real estate tycoon talk and move, including the mannerisms.
At one point during the debate, Trump dissed his opponent saying that she doesn't have the know-how to address the lack of jobs in the country. "If Hillary knew how, she would have done it already. Period. End of story. I won the debate, I stayed calm, just like I promised, and it is over. Goodnight Hofstra," he exclaimed.
Clinton responded by saying that in her opinion, she's going to be the next president. "This is going so well. It's going exactly as I've always dreamed," she said while in tears. Michael Che was the third man on-stage playing the role of Lester Holt.
SNL 2016 Casting Changes
Darrell Hammonnd and Larry David also had their parts on the political sketch as Bill Clinton and Senator Bernie Sanders.
Meanwhile, Michaels revealed that the idea of getting Baldwin to play Trump's character came from SNL alum Tina Fey. He got the idea from her and thought that Baldwin could really pull it off and have just the right chemistry with McKinnon.
There are three additions in the cast members, namely Mikey Day, Melissa Villaseñor and Alex Moffat. The three were set to fill in the shoes of a couple of six-year mainstays Taran Killam and Jay Pharoah, who were both cut at the start of the season.
The SNL opener, which aired Oct. 1, was also graced by musical guest, The Weeknd.
