Seattle Seahawks Rookie Defensive End Malik McDowell May Play This Season

Malik McDowell may still get the chance to suit up for the Seattle Seahawks this season.

During a press conference last Friday, Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll finally shed some light on McDowell's status for this season and he has confirmed that the rookie defensive end was still recovering from a "really bad concussion."

That must have been a serious blow to the head because it's been months already since he got hurt in an all-terrain vehicle (ATV). He also noted that McDowell will be reassessed in the next few weeks to determine if he can play this season.

"We don't know that yet. He's got some stuff coming up in the next couple weeks — I think it's within two weeks — that he'll get reassessed and all that, just to see where we are. There's been some conversation, you know, different camps kind of, about where he is and how he's doing. So the check-ups are really important. And we'll just see," Carroll said, via The News Tribune.

"We have not ruled that thought out, that he can come back," he added.

The former Michigan State standout has been on the shelf since the accident back in July and not much is known about his condition. The Seahawks have refused to disclose the severity of the injuries he sustained, but there were reports saying that he has at least suffered a concussion and facial lacerations.

McDowell's injuries were not believed to be career-threatening, though. However, that didn't stop observers from speculating that he might never play football again if he had suffered a serious injury to the head.

McDowell will have to pass some tests first before he is given the go signal to play, but it's definitely good to hear that he may return to the field this year given the extent of the injury.
