Since the age of 3, James Matthews has been inseparable from the piano. When he graduated from high school, it seemed to be all he had. His parents were out of the picture when he was student at Florida Southern College in Lakeland, Fla., and, without a home, he secretly slept in the piano studio at school.
His professor found out and helped the piano prodigy transfer to the University of West Florida in Pensacola, where Matthews could live in a dorm while working on his craft. And his craft is now taking him to music's most venerated stage, Carnegie Hall.
