Selena Gomez Was Unpopular in High School
Selena Gomez was unpopular in high school, according to the actress in a recent interview.
Selena Gomez's unpopularity stemmed from her lack of confidence, she told Daily Mail. Although she lives life as a superstar now because of her success on Disney's "Wizards of Waverly Place," the 19-year-old revealed that high school was a very humbling experience for her.
"I was never the popular kid at school," she told. "I had two friends, but I just sat at the back of the room and got on with my work."
Even though she now dates pop superstar Justin Bieber, Gomez didn't have such luck in high school. In fact, she never dated anyone.
"I never went out with guys at school. I had a crush on a guy, but I never told him about it," she divulged. Instead, said, Gomez, she did what any shy teenage girl would do: "I avoided him!"
Gomez, who got her acting start at age seven, was performing throughout high school. By that time, "Wizards of Waverly Place" had become a hit, but that popularity didn't extend to high school. She said she could have even been bullied, had it not been for her more popular cousin, a cheerleader.
"Nobody picked on me because my cousin was one of the popular gang," she said. "She was always very protective of me, so I guess I was very lucky."
Gomez didn't finish high school the traditional way, possibly because of her acting commitments. Instead, she was homeschooled, and received her diploma in 2010.
After surviving her unpopularity at school, Gomez now uses what she learned at that time to endure the criticism that comes along with show business.
"There's a lot of rejection in this industry and it's tough. … But if you love it, then that's all that matters," she told.
"You've got to go for it. I still have people trying to bring me down, but I'm happy because I love what I do. Ignore the cruel jibes and stick with the nice people," she added.
