'Shameless' Actor Macy Recovers from Skin Cancer Treatment

William H. Macy has recovered from surgery on his nose after being diagnosed with skin cancer.

The star in the upcoming series "Shameless" appeared on the morning show "Live! With Kelly" Tuesday with a small bandage on the bridge of his nose.

The show's host Kelly Ripa questioned the actor about the bandage, and Macy explained that he had underwent surgery to remove a basal-cell carcinoma. The condition is the result of years spent in the sun, damaging his skin.

"I have many, many stories, but the truth is I have a basal-cell (carcinoma) and I couldn't make any of the others work," said the actor speaking to Ripa.

"I did bar fight, I did damsel in distress, and what I've come up with so far is, 'If you think I look bad, you should see the surgeon,'" Macy joked.

Macy admitted his condition was due to his failure to use sunscreen while growing up in the South. "I'm Scot/Irish heritage," said Macy. "and [that's what I get for] spending a misspent youth in Georgia with no sunscreen."

The actor portrays a perpetually drunk father of six who cope as well as they can with him in the new comedy, "Shameless." Emmy Rossum and Ethan Cutkosky also star in Showtime's new series, which begins Sunday at 10 p.m. EST.

The 61-year-old actor has been married to actress Felicity Hoffman since 1997.

In a past interview, Macy described himself as a "sort of Middle American, WASPy, Lutheran kind of guy… Everyman."

Macy's acting career has seen two Emmy Awards and a Screen Actors Guild Award, and he is also a three-time Golden Globe Award nominee.
