Boxing News, Rumors 2014: Shane Mosley Returning? Welterweight Wants a Comeback
Boxer "Sugar" Shane Mosley said that he had no desire to return from his boxing career, although he said he might opt to return to the ring only against the best welterweight boxers in the world. Mosley recently turned 43 years old.
Mosley last fought almost a year ago on November 2013 against Australian boxer Anthony "The Man" Mundine. The match ended in a loss for Mosley. The former champion boxer said he understimated the size difference between him and Mundine.
"Anthony is 6 ft. and I am 5'9, plus he normally fights two weight classes above me," said Mosley. "When we weighed in we were around the same weight (153lbs), but when we fought he was about 177lbs and I was no more than 159lbs. He used his height to come over the top of me and put his weight on me until my back gave out, so that is not a loss I really feel."
Mosley had also said that his body frame is built for weight classes he has been a champion in, most recently in the welterweight division. If Mosley went up in weight to match Mundine, his performance level wouldn't be nearly as optimal as he was in the welterweight division.
While losing the match against the Australian, he feels a rematch isn't necessary since Mundine wasn't in his weight class, saying he fought him because he only wanted to fight. As for seeking a match against any big names of his weight class, he says that there's only a few challenges that truly interests him as he enters the final stage of his career.
"Right now, I am not planning to return to boxing at this time, but you never know. If the right opportunity presented itself and the public wanted a fight, I may consider it," he told Boxing News.
