'Sharp Objects' Cast News: Chris Messina Reunites With Amy Adams

"The Mindy Project" actor Chris Messina reunited with Oscar winner Amy Adams on HBO's upcoming drama and thriller "Sharp Objects." The stars worked together before in the 2009 film "Julie & Julia."

The actor shared that they filmed "Sharp Objects" from March to August, where he played Det. Richard Willis. He shared via The Hollywood Reporter that it was a role he has not done before.

In the book source that author and executive producer Gillian Flynn wrote, Richard profiled serial killers and became enamored with Camille Preaker (Adams), a journalist who wrote about the crimes in their small town. Their proximity to each other in trying to put the pieces of the murder puzzle together drew a line between their personal and professional relationship.

"The book by Gillian Flynn is beautiful and dark," Messina said of his new miniseries. "It was a great experience and an intense commitment to really incredible material."

Messina also said he learned something new about filmmaking in such a short span from director Jean-Marc Vallee ("Big Little Lies"). He stated that the director had a different style and he had to adjust to it.

"Sharp Objects" won't premiere on HBO until potentially in spring 2018. Showrunner and writer Marti Noxon ("UnREAL") has been invested in the project more than three years ago.

Noxon said via MTV that she Flynn constantly discussed women and violence in putting together "Sharp Objects" for the small screen. Noxon felt the project came at the right time when the TV landscape is changing and she told studio heads that the story shouldn't be on the big screen.

"There's a tolerance for particularly dark female characters [on television]," Noxon remarked. "I think that in this era of 'True Detective' and these series that really delve into some pretty gnarly places."

"Sharp Objects" also stars Patricia Clarkson as Camille's mom, Adora. Australian actress Eliza Scanlen plays Amma, the half-sister, while Elizabeth Perkins plays Jackie. The book came out in 2006.
