Shaw Clifton Becomes The Salvation Army's 18th General
Shaw Clifton, the Salvation Army territorial commander for the United Kingdom and Ireland, officially became new general of the international Christian charity organization on Saturday.
Shaw Clifton, the Salvation Army territorial commander for the United Kingdom and Ireland, officially became the new general of the international evangelical organization on Saturday, immediately following the retirement of its former general, John Larsson.
Upon Larssons retirement from the position at midnight on Apr. 1, 2006 the date of the generals 68th birthday - Clifton became the 18th general of the world's second largest provider of social aid. The 2006 Salvation Army High Council had elected the territorial commander to be the organizations next general on Jan. 28 the ninth day of the High Councils election meeting.
I feel humbly proud to be succeeding General John Larsson and Commissioner Freda Larsson, Clifton said after his election earlier this year, according to the Salvation Army. God has blessed their ministry.
At a special low-key thanksgiving service held at the International Headquarters (IHQ) in London right before their retirement, the Larssons spoke of the great pleasure they had received through almost 50 years of active service as Salvation Army officers. The retiring officers also thanked God for all He has given them.
According to the Salvation Army, the new general will be welcomed by the public in Londons Kensington Town Hall on Apr. 8 at 4 p.m.
