'Shenmue 3' Release Date, Latest News: Kickstarter Campaign Exceeds $6.7 Million
"Shenmue 3" is an upcoming action-adventure role-playing video game developed by Neilo and YS Net. Written, directed and produced by game creator Yu Suzuki, the video game follows the story of Ryo Hazuki, a young martial artist whose father was killed in China back in the 1980s.
To make the project possible, the developers behind "Shenmue 3" started a Kickstarter campaign, with the target originally set at $2 million. However, as of Feb. 21, the game has officially gained a total of 73,858 backers with the total pledged fund amounting to $6,717,520, according to the game's official website.
Over 26,000 backers have pledged an amount of either $29 or $38, which guarantees backers a digital copy of "Shenmue 3" once the game is officialy released. A physical copy of the video game is priced at $60. For $100, backers get a trial version of "Shenmue 3" as well as their name in the credits. There are also other kinds of pledges available, promising appropriate rewards in exchange, including a digital soundtrack and a T-shirt.
In the December 2016 issue of Famitsu game creator Suzuki spoke about the progress of "Shenmue 3." He teased that the video game is in the final stage and is already on its way towards full-scale production.
"Development is entering the final stage headed towards full-scale production. Early in the new year, I think we'll be able to show you things such as new videos," Suzuki said.
"We will continue progressing with development so that our backers and those who experience the world of Shenmue for the first time can do so with pleasure," he added.
The crowdfunded video game "Shenmue 3" is slated for release on the PlayStation 4 and the PC sometime in December 2017. As of Dec. 15, interested gamers can pre-order a physical or digital copy of the upcoming game here.
