'Sherlock' season 4 news: Canceled or not?

The co-creator of "Sherlock" has addressed rumors regarding the cancellation of the series.

It was previously reported by The Stately Harold that Mark Gatiss, co-creator of the series, recently released a statement saying, "I have some bad news regarding 'Sherlock.' I know that we have promised you a fourth season time and time again, but at this point in time, this is not a prioritization that BBC can make in the near future."

Gatiss addressed the statement and confirmed that he did not say it. He explained that BBC will be continuing forward with Sherlock. The production for Sherlock season 4 is expected to begin next year. Meanwhile, co-creator Steven Moffat has also dropped hints regarding the upcoming season. He explained that season 4 will have a darker theme, which will involve more emotional scenes.

He said, "It will be challenging place to go. We always start with a re-introduction that builds toward a darker climax — we might just be going darker [from the outset]. We got a very, very good set of ideas, We're going to try to take it somewhere we've never been before — and I don't mean outer space."

There is also an upcoming special episode that will be released before the fourth season of Sherlock. It will be set in the Victorian Era, and will be a stand-alone episode, not at all related to the happenings in season 4.

Moffat explained, "The special is its own thing. It's not part of the run of three episodes. It had to be a separate entity on its own. It's kind of in its own little bubble."

There were also rumors that Tom Hiddleston will be joining the series as Sherrinford Holmes. However, this has not yet been confirmed.

The special episode will debut this December. Sherlock season 4 is expected to premiere in 2017.
