'Sherlock' season 4 release date: Premiere delayed to 2017

Fans will be disappointed to hear that they will have to wait longer for the return of the anticipated series "Sherlock."

It was reported that Sherlock season 4 will begin filming early into 2016. With that, the series was expected to return later in the year. However, there was recent news that stated Sherlock will not return until 2017.

With an effort to appease fans during the long wait, PBS is expected to release a one-episode special that will be set in the Victorian Era. It is expected to premiere at the end of this year, as a stand-alone episode.

Creator Steven Moffat explained that the special will not be related to the upcoming season. He said during an interview with Entertainment Weekly, "The special is its own thing. We wouldn't have done the story we're doing, and the way we're doing it, if we didn't have this special. It's not part of the run of three episodes. So we had this to do it — as we could hardly conceal — it's Victorian. [Co-creator Mark Gatiss] and me, we wanted to do this, but it had to be a special, it had to be separate entity on its own. It's kind of in its own little bubble."

He also shared that the special will be dark and full of surprises for the fans. It was reported that it was inspired by the time period of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It was teased that the fans will see another side of Holmes as the characters will be portrayed in a different culture.

Meanwhile, the upcoming season is also expected to close the gap between the release dates for the U.K. and U.S. air dates. While there has been no news about the exact release of the fourth season, the special will be released this holiday season.
