'Sherlock' Season 4 Spoilers: Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman Return in December
Excitement builds up as fans of the fave "new sexy" sleuth on television find out that the return of BBC's hit series, "Sherlock," has been moved up from a 2017 release to December of this year. This was confirmed by Martin Freeman during an appearance on "The Graham Show." Freeman, who plays Sherlock Holmes' sidekick, John Watson, gave the word on the show's season four opening, saying the show will be out "around Christmas" and that he will in fact be returning with the show's star, Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays the hawk-eyed "consulting detective" Sherlock Holmes.
Freeman said Friday, "We are back filming now and the three shows will, I imagine, be out around Christmas."
The new season, the show's fourth, comes back earlier than the usual New Year's Day release and will have three episodes. "Sherlock" writers, Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat, have teased the show's return on Huffington Post as well as what is in store for the audience which has eagerly anticipated the upcoming season.
"Ghosts of the past are rising in the lives of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson bringing adventure, romance and terror in their wake. This is the story we've been telling from the beginning. A story about to reach its climax ..."
The next season will be expected to dish out more exhilarating challenges and something new for the characters. It is highly rumored that Sherlock's nemesis Moriarty (Andrew Scott), a ghost from the past, will be back on the show with some intriguing explanation for his death back in the previous season. Hints have been dropped about a highly charged meeting between the two.
Cumberbatch himself has spoken of being excited for everyone to catch the next season's airing, promising that the long wait will prove "worth it."
Earlier reports pegged Mary Watson (Amanda Abbington) as pregnant this season and, along with her new husband, Dr. Watson, shall face the challenges of parenthood.
The specific release date has not been announced as yet.
