Sony 4K TV News: HDR Support for 2015 UHD Models Comes With Amazon Promotion Deal

Sony has announced it will be rolling out an update for a number of its 2015 4K UHD TV models with Amazon Prime content thrown in.

Japanese tech giant, Sony will soon be launching High Dynamic Range support for an additional number of its 4K Ultra HD TV sets via an update it will initially release through Amazon Prime Instant Video.

The update would allow the televisions to accept and process HDR metadata and also allows the units to display HDR images. HDR will allow televisions to display a greater range of luminosity, with brighter whites and deeper blacks.

HDR support also works to increase the color intensity displayed, and is different from the X930C and X940C models' XDR, or X-tended Dynamic range feature, which increases a television's brightness.

Sony announced an initially limited HDR support for a minimal content selection will be available, and while the company originally intended it for the X940C and X930C series, the update has now been made accessible for the X850C, X900C, and X910C.

To demonstrate HDR support on its displays, Sony has also announced a partnership with Amazon Instant Video to stream HDR-ready content to selected Sony TV models. The streaming service will be made available to users who make a new purchase of the qualifying Sony TV models within this fall, giving them up to $100 worth of access to Amazon's HDR content, including, "Fury," "After Earth," "Men in Black 3," and "The Amazing Spider Man 2."

Beyond the promotion, users who already own Sony 4K UHD TV units and have existing Amazon Prime accounts will be given access to Season 1 of Amazon's original shows, "Mozart in the "Jungle" and "Transparent," with reports Amazon will soon be releasing its "Red Oaks" 80s comedy pilot via this promotion.

Sony has yet to announce whether it will be releasing any future updates to enable its televisions to process HDR from sources other than Amazon, including from its upcoming 4K UHD Blu-ray player.
