Sony Animation is Making A Movie About Emojis!
With different types of film adaptations abound, from animation to live-action and vice versa, it is still kind of surprising to hear that something so common as "emojis" are getting their own animated movie. The news comes after Sony Animation won a bidding war recently to do just that – make an animated feature film about emojis.
Emojis are small digital icons or images used in electronic communication such as e-mail, chat and social media, to express an idea or an emotion. Most popular of these of course is the smiley face. They were originally used mainly in Japan, but its usage eventually spread outside and became very popular. But is this popularity enough to generate interest about a movie about these icons?
A Deadline report said that Sony Pictures Animation bested two other major studios in the bid, namely Warner Brothers and Paramount. The bid was over a pitch that was prepared by Anthony Leondis, who apparently presented storyboards on what the movie would be about. According to the report, it was Sony who was gung-ho about getting the project, with express authorization from Sony chief Tom Rothman.
Now that Sony has acquired the project, they have identified a producer for the project which will be Michelle Raimo Kouyate. The report likewise noted that emojis were not under some intellectual property by anyone and therefore no rights need to be bought. The report also mentioned that there may be other pitches coming, which Sony might also grab quickly as well.
The project that was presented by Leondis will be co-written by Leondis with Eric Siegel. Leondis is also pegged to direct the film. Leondis had previously directed "Kung Fu Panda: Secrets of the Masters" as well as the coming DreamWorks animated film "B.O.O.: Bureau of Otherworldly Operations" which has yet to be released.
No one knows what the movie about emojis will look like. If this project is indeed pushing through, moviegoers will find out soon.
