Sony PlayStation VR May Soon Provide PC Support

Japanese company Sony has big plans for the Sony PlayStation VR, its entry into VR gaming technology. Although the headset is not set for release until later this year, the company is already exploring how to expand support for the headset that will likely include support for PCs.

According a report in The Independent, a senior executive of Sony shared this piece of news about their plans in an interview with the Japanese paper Nikkei. In the interview, Sony executive vice president Masayasu Ito said that the possibility of making the PSVR compatible with PCs is quite high, primarily because PCs and the PSVR share many similar parts.

If Sony is successful in doing this, this will give the more expensive VR headsets, the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive, a run for their money, as the PSVR is the cheapest headset among the three, which will make it more attractive for early adopters. Ito however said that this may be coming in the long-term as they are currently focusing their efforts in developing games for the PSVR.

The PSVR headset, which will retail for $399, works with a PlayStation Camera which is said to help with positional tracking in order to provide the full VR experience. A PSVR bundle is available for $500 which includes the PSVR headset, cables, the PS Camera, two PS Move motion controllers, stereo headphones, a demo disc and a PS VR Worlds disc, according to another report in Tech Times. This bundle will work with the PS4.

If the PSVR becomes compatible to the PC, its lower price compared to the Oculus Rift ($599) and the HTC Vive ($799) makes for a more attractive package than the others. Aside from the PC, it can work with a PS4 console. The other headsets also require high-end gaming PCs in order to get the best VR experience.

The PSVR will be released October of this year.
