Sony Unveils New PlayStation VR Headset; Supports HDR, Stereo Headphones
Sony has recently unveiled a new PlayStation Virtual Reality headset that will support high-dynamic range and stereo headphone cables.
The new PS VR headset, with model number CUH-ZVR2, was first spotted on Sony PlayStation Japan's website since the device will initially be released for the Japanese market this month.
Sony later on addressed fans in North America and briefly discussed the upcoming PS VR refresh by updating the device's official FAQs page on Monday. In it, the company confirmed that "a hardware update to PlayStation VR is being prepared."
Obviously, the CUH-ZVR2 will be released in Japan much earlier and Sony has refrained from answering exactly when it will arrive in North America. It will be made available in Japan on Oct. 14, but the company added that further release details for their customers in North America will be shared "at a later date."
In terms of features and design improvements, however, Sony has provided fans with enough details to raise the expectation bar for the unreleased gaming device.
According to Sony, the CUH-ZVR2 will feature "an updated design that enables the stereo headphone cables to be integrated with the VR headset and a slimmer, streamlined connection cable."
Meanwhile, Sony will also place "an updated Processor Unit" in the CUH-ZVR2 to provide HDR pass through support. This means that the next PS VR hardware version will technically have a double purpose since the new feature will let its users play HDR-supported PS4 titles on a TV "without having to disconnect the Processor Unit in between the TV and the PS4 system."
With the major upgrades applied to CUH-ZVR2, Sony clarified that its Processor Unit was not interchangeable with the older PS VR headset or the CUH-ZVR1. On a positive note, all games that were compatible with the first PS VR headset can also be played on the CUH-ZVR2.
In terms of pricing, Sony only mentioned that the CUH-ZVR2 will have same bundle price as its predecessor. Right now, the existing PS VR bundle costs around $500. Meanwhile, in Japan, it is priced at 44,980 Yen (~$398) excluding taxes.
