Sony Xperia Ion Android 4.4 KitKat Update Now Available
A Sony Xperia Ion Android 4.4 KitKat update is now available in the form of a new ROM.
XDA member MrGezz and a developer named RaymanFX helped to create this new KitKat ROM which is actually an unofficial CM11 build. It is currently in the alpha stage of development but is said to be very stable with only a few issues. The LED indicator doesn't show when the device is charging and the battery percentage does not appear in the status bar.
Sony abandoned the Xperia Ion after rolling out Android 4.1.2. This new software is a significant jump for the device and will push it to where it needs to be for the New Year.
The Android 4.3 JellyBean update recently rolled out for the Sony Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xpera ZQ and Xperia Tab Z.
The new software brings various improvements to these devices including a slightly updated UI, updates to Sony native apps and the addition of the Sony Smart Social camera. An updated version of Stamina mode is also now available and gives users new options to extend their battery life.
This same update rolled out for the Xperia Z1 and Z Ultra last week.
The Android 4.4 KitKat update is now available for several Sony devices including the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia T and Xperia V in the form of a new ROM.
A group of developers known as the FreeXperia team released unofficial KitKat builds of CyanogenMod 11 for all of these Sony Xperia devices this week. They are also working on upgrades for the Xperia Z1 and Xperia Z Ultra.
The official CyanogenMod 11 build is still not available. These unofficial versions are potentially unreliable at this time so they should be downloaded and installed with caution.
The company confirmed that the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia SP, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1, Xperia T, Xperia TX and Xperia V would all receive Android 4.3 earlier this year and has already made good on many of those promises.
