Spelman College Glee Club Amazes & Inspires LA

The renowned Spelman College Glee Club performed in LA for the first time in 30 years.

On Friday, Mar. 11, '50 Moore Productions at the Los Angeles Bah??Center presented "Amaze and Inspire" featuring the highly renowned Spelman College Glee Club as part of the closing festivities of Black History Month and to conclude their 2004-2005 West Coast Tour. It had been 30 years since the Glee Club of Atlanta, Georgia had performed in the Los Angeles area.

The Spelman College Glee Club's repertoire consisted of sacred and secular choral music literature for women's voices with special emphasis on traditional spirituals, music by African-American composers, compositions from many cultures and commissioned works.

The group was led by Music Director and Department of Music Chair, Dr. Kevin P. Johnson, a native of Los Angeles, alumnae of Crenshaw High School and California State University Los Angeles. He is a member of the American Society of Composers and Publishers as well as an active member of the American Choral Directors Association. He is also a member of Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society and the recipient of several musical honors and awards.

Also performing at the concert were special musical guests, Eddie Tate and Milestones. Eddie Tate, also a native of the Los Angeles area has performed and shared stages with Neil Diamond, Gladys Knight, Mary Mary, Shirley Caesar, Karen Clark-Sheard and Dorinda Clark-Cole of the Clark Sisters and Kirk Franklin to name a few.

For over fifty years, the Spelman College Glee Club has maintained a reputation of choral excellence. The Glee Club has toured throughout the country performing for a variety of audiences. They have performed in concert halls such as Fanueil Hall, the Brooklyn Academy of Music (NY), Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center and numerous churches, high schools, colleges, and universities. Their international travels have taken them to Brazil, Canada and Italy.

Founded in 1881, Spelman College is the only historically Black college in the nation to be included on the U.S. News and World Report's list of top 75 "Best Liberal Arts Colleges - Undergraduate," 2005.

They will travel to Northern California with performances in San Francisco, Oakland and Richmond.
