'Star Citizen' Release Date News: Alpha 2.0, Gameplay Footage Released

Game designer Chris Robert's "Star Citizen" has announced that its Alpha 2.0 is now available while also releasing a gameplay footage of the game.

On Saturday, Dec. 12, the designer and developer-publisher Cloud Imperium Games announced at the Robert Space Industries website the launch of the alpha. The alpha is the biggest update so far and represents the "first true slice" of the game, according to Engadget.

"Star Citizen Alpha's 2.0 update sets the stage for Star Citizen's persistent universe, offering players access to multi-crew ships, large world maps and FPS combat for the first time," reads the Feature List page of the site. "Citizens can look forward to additional ships, locations and game mechanics being built on top of this foundation as development progresses. Alpha 2.0 offers your first taste of Star Citizen's living, breathing world… so get out there and explore the 'Verse!"

Alpha 2.0 features more than 15 new missions. Those who love to dogfight can choose from eight Comm Array missions. Eight other missions focus on protecting civilians, while one mission puts players on a quest to explore an abandoned station.

The alpha also offers backers their first taste of first-person combat on locations such as space stations and ship decks. The alpha also allows players to recharge energy weapons, heal themselves, and pick up ballistic weapons, ammo, and MediPens in-game.

The new build also has multi-crew ships where players can team up with friends and assume different roles such as pilot, engineer, or turret gunner.

"Star Citizen" has a video showcasing the features of its new Alpha 2.0 build that you can watch below.

In the past, "Star Citizen" only had stand-alone pieces of the game like a dogfight module or a hangar. The alpha will provide players with their first "full experience" of the game, albeit not the final one. Nevertheless, "Star Citizen's" latest build and gameplay footage (above) seem to reassure backers that the game is going along just fine.

"Star Citizen" is a game that makes use of crowdfunding, which is now at a record $100 million. No final release date, however, has been announced for the game.
