'Star Trek: Beyond' release date delayed by two weeks – new release date is July 22, 2016

Paramount Studios has rescheduled the release date of "Star Trek: Beyond." The film was supposed to be released on July 8, 2016. Its release has been pushed backwards by two weeks. The film will now open on July 22, 2016.

The third installment of the revitalized "Star Trek" franchise will be directed by Justin Lin. The film stars Chris Pine as the dashing Captain James T. Kirk, Zachary Quinto as the enigmatic Spock, Simon Pegg as Scotty, Zoe Zaldana as Uhura, and Anton Yelchin as Chekov. As of now, we know that Idris Alba and Joe Taslim will be in the film, but we don't know if William Shatner will appear in the movie or not.

Taking over from J.J. Abrams is Justin Lin. Abrams directed the two previous "Star Trek" movies - 2009's "Star Trek" and 2013's "Star Trek: Into the Darkness."

Paramount Studios have not specified any reason for the change in the release date, but it seems to be the IMAX venues. Apparently, "Tarzan" is releasing on July 8 and the IMAX venues have been taken up by it. A movie like "Star Trek: Beyond" definitely needs the IMAX venues hence the studio must have shifted the release date and brought it forward to July 22 where they will be getting the IMAX venues.

This new release date puts "Star Trek: Beyond" in direct competition with Warner. Bros' "King Arthur" and 20th Century Fox's "Ice Age: Collision Course." These are major competitors for "Star Trek: Beyond" but given the fact that this is the last of the trilogy and fans of "Star Trek" will surely rush to see their favorite characters, Paramount seems to be confident of the film.

Also, the studio had a solid hit in July this year. Its "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation" starring Tom Cruise made nearly $190 million at the domestic box office. So maybe Paramount thinks that July is a lucky month for them.

Fans will just have to re-mark their calendars. "Star Trek: Beyond" is set for release on July 22, 2016.
