'Star Trek: Discovery' News: CBS Confirms Series Renewal; New Season to Premiere January 2018

For a time, fans were clueless as to whether "Star Trek: Discover" would return for another season or not. Luckily for them, CBS All Access confirmed earlier this week that the series would be renewed for a sophomore season. In its announcement, the digital service revealed that the debut season of the series was record-breaking when it came to total subscriber sign-ups in a single day.

In an official statement released Monday, CBS Interactive President and Chief Operating Officer Marc DeBevoise said, "In just six episodes, 'Star Trek: Discovery' has driven subscriber growth, critical acclaim and huge global fan interest for the first premium version of this great franchise." According to him, fans of the "Star Trek" franchise have received "Star Trek: Discovery" very well, giving a boost to its ratings and making its renewal a no-brainer.

DeBevoise also went on to commend the people behind the series who have successfully pulled off the first season of "Star Trek: Discovery." "The series has a remarkable creative team and cast who have demonstrated their ability to carry on the 'Star Trek' legacy. We are extremely proud of what they've accomplished and are thrilled to be bringing fans a second season of this tremendous series," he said.

"Star Trek: Discovery" initially debuted on CBS proper before it was eventually moved to the streaming platform. The network used the same strategy for its other series, "The Good Wife" spinoff "The Good Fight," which also debuted on CBS before being transferred to CBS All Access. Just like "Star Trek: Discovery," the spinoff series starring Christine Baranski is also getting its sophomore season.

"Star Trek: Discovery" is set during the Starfleet's ongoing battle with the Klingons. The first half of the sci-fi series is set to wrap up on Sunday, Nov. 12 at 8:30 p.m. Its second half is set to premiere in January 2018.
