'Star Wars Battlefront 2' Slammed for Loot Boxes; EA Responds to Criticisms

"Star Wars Battlefront 2" has just wrapped up its open beta, but not before being roundly criticized for what players call a "pay to win" system with what they've seen of the game's loot boxes. DICE and EA have put up a post-beta update to address these issues.

For the most part, the open beta of "Star Wars Battlefront 2" earned the game quite a few more fans who loved how the new game improves on the first in just about every way — except for the loot box and progression mechanics, that is. Those sparked a still-raging debate on systems in the game that enables players to "pay to win," as PC Gamer notes.

In response, EA has posted a lengthy "thank you" note for the beta players on their official blog, while also addressing the issues along the way. They assured players that they are continuing to gather feedback even after the beta, before taking the point of random crates in the game.

"We know you have a lot of questions about Crates and progression, so we want to clarify a few things, as the complete system was not in the Beta and will continue to be tuned over time," EA and development studio DICE noted.

As it stands, various customization items and Star Cards, which can be used to upgrade characters in the game, can be earned from random crates. Moving forward, EA promised that they are rigging the progression system such that "the most powerful items in the game [are] only earnable via in-game achievements," as quoted by Engadget.

EA also promised players that they are looking to make the progression system deeper than what was seen in the open beta, which has just ended recently. The publisher also committed to keeping extra content free via "evolving, event-driven live service" and not by Season Passes, as other games have done.
