'Star Wars: Episode 8' Plot News: Director Rian Johnson Explains What 'The Last Jedi' Means

In a recent conversation with a fan through social media, "Star Wars" director Rian Johnson casually explained what the subtitle "The Last Jedi" means, and the explanation might be a little too plain.

Earlier this week, a Twitter user and "Star Wars" fan named Nate Richter approached Johnson through the social media platform, saying, "For my birthday today, all I want is for @rianjohnson to tell me what 'The Last Jedi' means." Johnson graciously granted Richter's wish and replied, "It means the final Jedi. Happy birthday!"

Despite the fact that word had already come from the director himself, the answer just resulted to more questions from "Star Wars" fans, such as, "'Final' as in no more Jedi ever?!"

And it is fairly understandable that it will be quite difficult to grasp if this is literally the 'last' for the Force.

It can be recalled that quickly after Disney and Lucasfilm revealed the title for "Star Wars: Episode 8," fans were quick to stitch their own theories around what "The Last Jedi" could really mean.

One popular theory combines the titles from Episodes 7 and 8 to make the sentence, "The Force awakens the last Jedi." There are also questions if "Jedi" refers to a single entity or if the word is actually in plural form.

The mystery behind the controversial title goes beyond Twitter or other social media platforms. It can be recalled that "Star Wars" actress Daisy Ridley had been repeatedly cornered by her "Murder on the Orient Express" co-star Josh Gad for some answers about his own "Star Wars: Episode 8" questions.

After Gad's first failed attempt, he recruited more big names in Hollywood to force Ridley to speak but he remained unsuccessful. Gad once enlisted help from the award-winning actress Judi Dench, who looked too serious while asking Ridley a series of questions such as, "Is Snoke Palpatine?" "Are you the last Jedi?" "What's the deal with Reylo?"

Not even a fierce-looking Dench could force Ridley, but Gad is unstoppable. He tried to convince Ridley again with help from more Hollywood stars, namely Chris Pratt, Penelope Cruz, Bryce Dallas Howard, directors Colin Trevorrow and JJ Abrams. The powerhouse group made Ridley crack a smile but not a "Star Wars" spoiler, unfortunately.

"Star Wars: The Last Jedi" will be shown in U.S. theaters starting Dec. 15.
