'Star Wars: Episode 9' Cast Updates, Release Date: New Casting Call Sparks Rumors of Character Deaths

Even though it is still over two years away, rumors have already begun to plague "Star Wars: Episode 9." This is mostly thanks to a casting call that recently made rounds online. And if there is any truth to it, Episode 9 may see a change in lead characters.

A new casting call has been posted on moviecastingcall.org and it gives fans a few details about the upcoming film. First of all, the post indicates that filming will begin this year in July, which makes sense because post-production does take a while because of the amount of effects plastered on to the movie.

However, the most intriguing part of the casting call, as pointed out by GamesRadar, is that the post also states that auditions will be held for "new lead and supporting roles." Considering new lead characters were already introduced in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," the publication posits that there may be one or more important deaths coming in "Star Wars: The Last Jedi."

"The Force Awakens" introduced the public to new lovable leads in the form of Daisy Ridley's Rey, John Boyega's Finn and Oscar Isaac's Poe. It also paved the way for a new conflicted villain--Adam Driver's Kylo Ren. And if new leads are being scouted for Episode 9, "The Last Jedi" could be making room by shaving off a character or two.

However, it should be noted that this is only one of the numerous possibilities for such a casting call. Neither Disney nor Lucasfilm have confirmed anything yet.

Perhaps new leads are exactly what "Star Wars" fans need. After all, younger actors and actresses are required to continue the popular saga, especially after the untimely death of Carrie Fisher.

It can be recalled that Fisher, who gave life to the iconic Princess Leia Organa, passed away in December 2016. The world came to a screeching halt when the news first broke. And while it is certainly disheartening to know that Fisher will not be in Episode 9--she had already completed work on "The Last Jedi"--Lucasfilm has said that visual effects or CGI will not be used to digitally recreate her character.

"Star Wars: Episode 9" will premiere in U.S. theaters on May 24, 2019.
