'Star Wars Episode 9' Spoilers: Will Luke Skywalker Still Appear In The Next Film?
The death of a major character in "Star Wars Episode 8: The Last Jedi" will open a lot of possibilities for the story of the upcoming "Star Wars Episode 9."
In the recently released installment of the epic "Star Wars" movie saga, Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) died after helping his sister General Leia Organa (the late Carrie Fisher) and the remaining Resistance soldiers to defeat the troops of the First Order. However, it does not mean that legendary Jedi Master will no longer appear in the next film.
In an interview with Business Insider, "The Last Jedi" director Rian Johnson hinted that there might be some big plans for Luke Skywalker in the still untitled "Star Wars Episode 9."
"I'm not sure what J.J. and [screenwriter] Chris Terrio are going to do in the next one with Luke, but setting up possibilities for the next one, honestly, it seems much like Obi-Wan going where he did after 'New Hope.'" the director stated. "The possibilities seemed even more exciting in terms of what Luke's place could be in the next chapter with him entering into this other realm as opposed to him having a lightsaber and being with our heroes. It opened more possibilities as opposed to fewer."
But while Luke's presence in the next "Star Wars" film might not be missed, it may not be the same for Fisher's character. The Princess who eventually turned into a fighting general will no longer be seen in the upcoming film after Fisher tragically died in 2016.
"Unfortunately Carrie passed away, so by the time we were well underway with Episode Nine in our thoughts – we had not written a script yet – we've regrouped and started over in January," Lucasfilm head Kathy Kennedy said in a statement back in April as reported by Express UK.
However, there are no details yet how Lucasfilm will remove Fisher's character since Leia did not die in "The Last Jedi."
