'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Cast News: JJ Abrams Reveals Heroes and Villains Through Trading Cards
Director J.J. Abrams and the makers of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" has revealed the names of the heroes and villains appearing in the movie through some creative throwback trading cards.
The trading cards were designed reminiscent of the Topps playing cards released around 1977 for the original film and the images were stills taken from the clips in the first trailer released on Nov. 28.
The complete set was released by Abrams and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy exclusively to Entertainment Weekly and fans can get a glimpse of the new characters and match the new names to the new faces.
The original Topps trading cards released five rounds of cards for the original 1977 "Star Wars" film in varying colors. In Abrams and Kennedy's modern mockup, they created five cards from the blue series and three cards from the red series. Each card also has a series number, which Abrams hinted was very important.
The characters introduced are: bouncing baby droid BB-8 on the move (#11), the maybe-villainous Poe Dameron in his X-Wing (#53), the ominous Kylo Ren igniting his flame-like lightsaber (#67), the mysterious Rey on her speeder (#74), Finn on the run while wearing a Stormtrooper uniform (#76), Stormtroopers preparing for a battle with a noticeably shorter trooper in their midst (#81), the X-Wings in formation as they skid along the lake (#88), and lastly is the fighting ship Millennium Falcon (#96).
There is no news yet on whether or not Abrams and company will release more for the veteran cast members, such as Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill and Andy Serkis. It is also unknown if they will issue cards for new cast members Adam Driver, Gwendoline Christie, Lupita Nyong'o, Max von Sydow and Domhnall Gleeson.
For now though Abrams and his team are hyping up anticipation for "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" before its theatrical release on Dec. 18, 2015.
