'Stranger Things' Actor Sean Astin on 'Lord of the Rings' TV Remake

"Stranger Things" actor Sean Astin is best known for his work as the hobbit Samwise Gamgee in the blockbuster trilogy "Lord of the Rings" (2001 to 2003). The actor recently commented on the planned remake of Tolkien's classic on the Amazon platform and said he knew it was bound to happen.

Astin got candid about the "Lord of the Rings" remake while sitting as guest on the online radio show SiriusXM. He predicted years ago that there will be a remake in 12 or 15 years after the movies' release since there's still plenty of story to tell from Tolkien's book.

The actor would usually get responses that no one can top how director Peter Jackson made "Lord of the Rings" a favorite hit on the big screen. Reports, however, came out this week that Warner Bros Television has plans of developing a show around the story, which will potentially run on Amazon's streaming site.

Astin said he won't likely reprise his role as Sam on the remake. He's not even considering becoming part of the TV show, should it progress in development.

"I'm carrying the Samwise banner for the Peter Jackson version of 'Lord of the Rings," Astin replied, adding he's more excited to see how the next Sam will do and who will actually get to play Frodo's best friend.

Fans of the original trilogy haven't warmed up to the idea of a "Lord of the Rings" remake. Netizens on Twitter expressed their displeasure for the project despite Warner Bros Television implying that it's not yet official and no writer is attached for now.

"Lord of the Rings" took nearly eight years to come together on the big screen. Divided into three installments as "Fellowship of the Ring," "Two Towers" and "Return of the King," the film not only broke box office records, it also received a total of 30 Oscar nominations. Of the three "Lord of the Rings" films, "Return of the King" walked away with plenty of accolades in 2003, including Best Picture.
