'Stranger Things' Season 3 Renewed or Canceled? Everything Coming Up Next

Production for "Stranger Things" season 3 will begin soon enough as Netflix renewed the show ahead of the second season premiere. Creators Matt and Ross Duffer have started breaking down the new story in preparation for production. So, what's coming up next?

"Stranger Things" season 2, which Netflix released on Friday, Oct. 27, ended with no cliffhangers about the show's beloved characters. Only, the threat of the Shadow Monster/Mind Flayer that possessed Will (Noah Schnapp) still remains in Hawkins as shown in the season's final shot.

Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) might have successfully closed the gate to the Upside Down using her telekinetic powers but that apparently only triggered the Mind Flayer to know she's still alive. Her life might still be in danger in season 3 even as her powers grow stronger.

"It's very much aware of the kids and particularly Eleven," the Duffer brothers told The Hollywood Reporter. "It had not encountered her and her powers until that final episode. Now, it knows that she's out there."

The Mind Flayer might even find a new host in "Stranger Things" season 3 based on what happened to two characters in season 2. Chief Hopper (David Harbour) and Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) inhaled dust from the Upside Down. Will the monster realize these two could be its way into the human's world?

Meanwhile, the new installment won't likely be coming to Netflix until a year and a half from now even as the Duffers have a clear idea for "Stranger Things" season 3. The show will also unleash another time jump given how the characters are aging in real life.

Most of them are expected to return and might also include other supporting characters like Paul Reiser (Dr. Owens) and Dacre Montgomery (Billy). Montgomery said he's is open to his character getting naughtier with Nancy and Mike's mom next season.

It's still unclear however if Kali/Eight (Linnea Berthelsen) or Dr. Brenner (Matthew Modine) will be part of the third season. "Stranger Things" season 1 and 2 are currently streaming on Netflix.
