Sugarland to Hold Memorial for Indiana Stage Collapse Victims
Sugarland has said it is planning a private service to honor fans that died at the Indiana State Fair during the stage collapse on Saturday. Five people were killed when the stage fell onto the first few rows of the audience, and at least 40 were injured.
In a statement posted on their official website Tuesday, Sugarland duo Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush said, “We would first like to hold space so that their families can have time to go through their own services and memorials.”
“Until that time we are holding a vigil for them. We join them on their mourning benches. And we stand in the gap asking God to offer them peace and healing. For those suffering from injury we hold you up with prayers for complete healing of your own,” the statement continued.
Kelly Russell, Sugarland’s publicist, says she has no more information on the memorial other than what the statement contained, according to AP.
The accident occurred when winds of 60-70 mph caused the stage to collpase minutes before Sugarland was to take the stage.
Two of the victims included a stagehand and a security officer.
Sugarland’s performance at the Iowa State Fair was canceled the day after the accident at the Indiana State Fair, which will remain open until August 21.
Lady Antebellum and Janet Jackson were scheduled to perform at the fair this week, but have canceled their appearances due to the tragedy.
On Thursday, Maroon 5 and Train will perform at the fair in honor of the deceased, and proceeds from the concert will go to the victim’s families, Fair officials say. The concert has been relocated to downtown Indianapolis.
Sugarland’s concert tour will resume on Thursday with a performance scheduled at the Hard Rock Pavilion in Albuquerque, N.M.
