'Suicide Squad 2' Latest Update: Mel Gibson as Director Not Yet a Done Deal

Australian director Mel Gibson has finally addressed recent rumors of his involvement with the planned sequel to the movie "Suicide Squad," confirming that he is in early talks to serve as its director.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight during the red carpet event before the 89th annual Academy Awards ceremony last Sunday, Feb. 26, Gibson was asked about his possible involvement in "Suicide Squad 2" as its director. Though he did not rule out the idea of directing the planned sequel to the box-office hit movie, he has not fully committed himself to the task either.

"I don't know," Gibson said. "I just met some guys about story points. It's not a done deal or anything. But it's just fun to shoot the bull, you know, when it comes to stories. And if we can elevate any kind of concept it's good. We'll see," he added.

The Hollywood Reporter previously reported that the "Hacksaw Ridge" director is being courted by Warner Bros. to helm "Suicide Squad 2." Their sources claim that although no official offer has been made, Gibson is reportedly familiarizing himself with the film's material.

However, Gibson is not the only director rumored to be attached to the next "Suicide Squad" movie. Other names being discussed to helm the forthcoming DC film include "Life" director Danny Espinosa and "Warm Bodies" director Jonathan Levine.

Given the critical and commercial success enjoyed by his current film "Hacksaw Ridge," Gibson is fielding several offers aside from "Suicide Squad." He is also in talks to join Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg in Paramount's "Daddy's Home 2." He is set to work together again with Vince Vaughn in the independent film "Dragged Across Concrete."

"Suicide Squad 2" has no official release date yet. The soonest movie to be released from the DC Expanded Universe is "Wonder Woman," which is scheduled to hit theaters on June 2.
