'Suicide Squad' Movie News: Movie to Feature an Updated Version of the Joker
Fans will get an updated version of the Joker in the upcoming "Suicide Squad" movie of DC and Warner Bros.
This is what "Suicide Squad" David Ayer revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
"The Joker has a lot of different looks, sort of built from the looks throughout the history of DC Comics but with a new sort of flair and flavor on him so he does feel like a modern-day gangster, because… he's always been a gangster," Ayer said.
With the changes that the fans will see in the character once the movie is out come August 5, there is no denying that much of it should be credited to Jared Leto's efforts to redefine the character, who has already been portrayed by several actors in the past. According to Leto, he and Ayer had a conversation prior to filming of his scenes, and he told the director his desire to experiment with the character. Thankfully, the director trusted him on how he planned to portray the character and give it a different kind of treatment based on his interpretation.
"He became a real person. I don't know if person is the right word. I think the Joker lives in between reality and another plane. Kind of a shaman in a way. It's a very intoxicating role to take on. You have permission to break rules and to challenge yourself and anyone around you in a really unique way," Leto revealed in his interview with the same Entertainment Weekly article.
Before the cameras started grinding to film his Joker scenes, Leto had to educate himself a lot about the character by reading and researching about the characters. For Leto, the process was vital for him to build his own and new concept about Joker as his previous ideas about the character were thrown away.
Last week, Will Smith, who plays the role of Deadshot in the movie, revealed what sort of a brutal joker the actor who breathes life to Joker is. Smith recalled that there was a time that they thought Leto was not attending their rehearsal, only to be surprised when the door was slammed open, and Leto entered and threw a dead pig on the floor. In a separate instance, he also gifted Margot Robbie, who plays Harley Quinn in the movie, a box of roses, which contained a live rat in it.
Apparently, Leto's educating himself about the Joker has made him a real-life brutal joker.
"Suicide Squad" arrives in theaters on August 5.
