'Suicide Squad' Spoilers, Cast News: Jared Leto's 'All-In' Joker Performance According to Will Smith
DC is all set to for making its cinematic universe strong in 2016. Despite being behind Marvel at this point, fans are very much excited for what DC has to offer in the next year. Not only is DC fulfilling the dream crossover in "Batman V Superman" but they're also offering audiences a step away from the usual hero storyline, by forming a supervillain group, the Suicide Squad.
Some of the characters comprising the controversial group are Deadshot (Will Smith), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Enchantress (Cara Delevingne) and Joke (Jared Leto). When the first trailer came out, it was actually Leto who had received the most criticism. It was no surprise since Heath Ledger's take on the iconic villain almost eight years ago was commendable enough that it even got him a posthumous Academy Award. Leto definitely had a tough act to follow and his co-stars were witnesses to his commitment to give out a convincing role as a successor of Ledger.
A few months back, Robbie shared what it was like working with Leto as Joker on set. She claims to have been "petrified" of the actor during the time, due to the approach Leto had taken on the role. He apparently chose "method acting," which required him to be in character all the time, on and offscreen. It had become so serious even that David Ayer had to hire an actual therapist on set, more likely to keep the actor in check since personifying such a dangerous villain in actual life could have major implications.
According to Screen Rant, Will Smith recently appeared in Zane Lowe's Beats 1 radio show. About 15 minutes into the interview, Smith talked about "Suicide Squad," as well as his thoughts on Leto's performance. He is quoted saying, "I've never actually met Jared Leto. We worked together for 6 months and we've never exchanged a word outside of 'Action!' and 'Cut!' We've never said 'Hello,' we've never said 'Good day.' I've only ever spoken to him as Deadshot and him as the Joker. I literally have not met him yet. So, the first time I see him will be 'Hey, Jared. What's up?' Not a single word exchanged off camera. He was all in on the Joker…I'm looking forward to meeting him."
If the description of Leto's co-star will be the main basis of his performance then it's safe to say that much can be expected when "Suicide Squad" hits theaters on Aug. 5, 2016.
