'Sunset Overdrive 2' Release Date Rumors: Insomniac Games CEO Talks 'Large-Scope' Sequel
A new installment of "Sunset Overdrive" is in the cards for Insomniac Games, but the developer said that they will need help from another studio to bring it together.
This is what Insomniac CEO Ted Price had to say about "Sunset Overdrive 2" in a recent Twitch livestream:
"Sunset [Overdrive]" is something that I know a lot of our fans talk about wanting to see the sequel. We need a partner for that. That's a big game; "Sunset 2" would be a very large-scope game.
The first "Sunset Overdrive" game was released in 2014 exclusively to the Xbox One. This time, however, Price said that they are open to release the sequel to more platforms since they are the ones who own the creative rights.
Interestingly, when asked by Game Informer about the franchise early this year and why there has not been any update on the development, he implied that Microsoft will have a huge significance on where the series is headed:
You'd have to ask Microsoft. We are passionate about that franchise, and we own it, so you may see more "Sunset" in the future from us. No promises, and no timeline to speak of, but it is something that represents our willingness to create unexpected experiences.
However, as Den of Geek noted, it is still partly Microsoft's call on whether or not "Sunset Overdrive 2" will happen and the franchise in general.
Last year, Microsoft stated that they are "proud" of the first game, describing Insomniac Games as a "great partner," which suggests that they are willing to work together again.
However, IGN says that Price's latest comments indicate that Microsoft may have turned down the opportunity despite the success of their initial partnership, which is why Insomniac is looking for other ways to bring "Sunset Overdrive 2" out. At the moment, however, nothing is set in stone yet.
