Super Bowl Commercials Jump on 'Mayan 2012' Theme
Viewers will be tuning in on Sunday not only to watch the New York Giants take on the New England Patriots, but also to check out the unique commercials that will air during the breaks.
Many of the ads are already circling the Internet, and some of them, like the Chevy Silverado "2012" ad, play on theme of the Mayan calendar ending on Dec. 21 of this year, which some believe might signify the end of the world.
In the commercial, a man in a Chevy drives around a grey and decimated city, and finally finds a small group of other survivors – who all lived to see another day because of their Chevys too.
A futuristic concept is also employed by another Chevy ad – for the Volt model of its cars. In it, a gang of curious aliens are fascinated by a man's Chevy Volt car, which he explains is powered both by electricity and gas – an idea that astounds them.
In a particularly amusing Audi commercial titled "Vampire Party," a vampire brings blood to a middle-of-the-night campfire woods gathering where a number of other vampires are partying. As he parks his Audi, however, he accidentally leaves his headlights on, which vaporize the other vamps on sight.
Last year's super-popular Volkswagen's "The Force" commercial, which was ranked number one by Adweek's Top Commercials of 2011 and features a young kid pretending to be Darth Vader, was referenced in Volkswagen's new commercial, "The Dog Strikes Back," featuring a dog getting in shape for an entire year to go chase after a VW car.
In the second portion of the ad, a famous Star Wars bar scene is parodied, where viewers from different species are watching the said VW commercial and arguing if it is better than VW's old Star Wars kid ad. When one bar-goer suggests that the dog was better, Darth Vader shows up and "chokes" him using the Force.
